You're reading: Azarov criticizes education ministry for cutting student stipends

Student stipends won't be cut, Ukrainian Premier Mykola Azarov has said.

“No one will be paid less than he or she used to receive earlier,”
the premier said in an interview with Ukrainian TV channels on Friday.

When asked why students received stipends that were Hr 200 lower in
July, the premier said that this happened due to the negligence of
officials in the Education, Science, Youth and Sports Ministry, who
issued their own internal instructions, ignoring a government order.

He added that he has warned the officials in charge of the issue that
if those to blame for the incident don’t resign on their own, he will
dismiss them.

Azarov added that such things still take place as a consequence of “the chaos in the government in previous years.”

The premier promised that stipends would be increased from Sept. 1, 2012.
