A candidate for the post of Ukrainian president, MP Petro Poroshenko, has said that Ukraine is able to become energy-independent in two years.

“Today, we have reverse supplies. If we add the Slovak reverse scheme and Russia will stop supplying gas at all, Ukraine will be able to satisfy gas demand, but we’ll be able to become fully energy-independent in two years,” he said in the televised debates on the First National television channel late on May 10.

Poroshenko is convinced that in the near term gas will stop being an element of the political influence on all European countries, including Ukraine.

“Gas will be a usual market good, which Europe will buy on the Ukrainian-Russian border, while shale gas, LNG, reverse supplies, which we’ve already settled will only facilitate fixing the issues of energy independence of the state,” he said.

Poroshenko said that a gas contract of 2009 signed by Ukraine and Russia is to be canceled or changed via the Stockholm court.

“Ukraine in 2009 signed the contract under pressure. History will set the record straight under what pressure – financial, psychological or by use of threats. Today, many European countries have amended their long-term contracts [with Gazprom],” he said.
