You're reading: 4 Simple Exercises for Improved Eye Health

Many of us want improved eye health, but simply do not know where to start. With all of the problems challenging our vision it can be difficult to discern whether or not you have complete autonomy over your eyes. Optilase, leading Laser Eye Surgery Clinic in Northern Ireland, brings you these simple exercises that will help keep your eyes healthy.

1. Take 5-10 Minute Rest Breaks.

Insomnia and just general restlessness is a real problem that many of us overlook for various reasons. Don’t let your eyes suffer because of this!If you want to relieve some of the strain stressing your eyes look away from the monitor and bright lights. Lean your head back either on a pillow or headrest for general support. Then close your eyes for a full 5-10 minutes. Think about things that relax you, meditate on positive occurrences and visualize all your successes. This tricky part here is not falling asleep, but if you can manage it go for it!

2. Use Heat to Relieve Stress

Many of us have probably tried this technique by accident, but liked how it felt to have something warm on our eyelids. Heat up a warmtowel either with hot water, or in the dryer and hold it over your eyes for a couple of minutes. This will reduce those annoying floaters you see and make you feel generally refreshed.

3. Play with Different Facial Expressions

Try looking to the side, practicing a surprised look, or even going cross-eyed. All three of these might sound silly, but they really do help. With looking to the side, look as far left and as far right as you can, holding this gaze for at least ten seconds each. Repeat this exercise several times for increased effectiveness. With the surprised look try squinting your eyes as hard you can and alternate between squinting and opening as wide as you can, holding for five seconds each. Now for the cross-eyed exercise. Try focusing on a narrow object such as a car key or pencil. Hold it at about arm’s length and look at it as you slowly bring it closer to your nose. Then move the object back at arm’s length. Repeat as many times as you like.

4. Rolling and Refocusing

Rolling your eyes involve alternating between slowly rolling to the left and right sides in a circles five to ten times. Refocusing is another technique. Sit or stand facing a blank wall if possible. Then place your thumb nearly a foot in front of your face and focus on it. Put your hand down and then focus on an object that is 10-20 feet away without moving your head. After about 20 seconds refocus on your thumb again.

If you’ve tried all of these techniques and still are not seeing or feeling any results, consult your eye doctor for more tips and information. Like anything else, your eye health will be dictated by how much rest you get, what you eat, time in front of monitors and many other variables.
