Georgian Ambassador to Ukraine Grigol Katamadze has predicted that this year's trade between Ukraine and Georgia could exceed $1 billion.

“Last year’s trade reached $800 million. We are confident that this year it will exceed a billion dollars,” he said on Radio Liberty.

Katamadze added that “there is a great opportunity to reach the trade turnover of one-and-a-half dollars in the next two or three years,” reads a statement posted on the Web site of Radio Liberty on Friday.

When asked why Georgia, unlike the EU countries that criticized the trials of opposition leaders in Ukraine, refused to express its position on this issue, the ambassador said that “we have a particular position with respect to Ukraine.”

Katamadze also noted that Georgia’s relations with Ukraine remained “very important”.
