Ukraine reaffirms its commitment to the Energy Community provisions and expects it to assume an active position in achieving a balance of interests between Ukraine, Russia and the European Union in the energy sector, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said in a statement regarding interaction between Kyiv and the Energy Community.

“Ukraine reaffirms its commitment to the Energy Community principles and expects its active position in consolidating efforts with the aim of developing clear, transparent and fair rules of the game in the energy sector and achieving a balance of interests between Ukraine as the principal transporter of energy resources on the continent, Russia as their leading supplier, and the EU as the end user,” the ministry said.

Ukraine’s accession to the Energy Community in 2011 was an important step in the context of its course toward European integration, the ministry said.

“Since the moment Ukraine acquired Energy Community membership, it has been gradually honoring its commitments regarding the adaptation of its national law to the European Union’s standards and rules in the energy sector and in providing stability and security of shipments of energy resources to European countries,” it said.

The ministry said energy issues will be discussed during Ukrainian Energy and Coal Industry Minister Eduard Stavytsky’s visit to Brussels scheduled for next week and during a Ukraine-EU summit on Feb. 25.
