You're reading: Official: Ukraine from 2013 to ban imports of medicine not proved to be effective

Imports to Ukraine of medicine of doubtful quality and effectiveness will be banned from January 1, 2013, Head of the State Service for Medicine, Oleksiy Solovyov has said.

“From January 1, 2013, under a cabinet resolution, imports of
medicine that do not have proof of their effectiveness will be banned.
It’s no secret that from 2005 to 2007, medicine, the effectiveness of
which was questionable, appeared on the market. The government with its
decision introduced a ban on imports of such medicine from January 1,
2013,” Solovyov at a roundtable with the participation of
representatives of the government and players of the pharmaceutical
market on September 28, 2012.

“The market will not suffer from this, as according to our estimates,
these medicines of doubtful quality will be completely replaced by
medicine made in Ukraine,” headed.

He also said that sales of pharmaceutical products in H1, 2012 came to Hr 14 billion.

“The Ukrainian pharmaceutical market in H1, 2012 came to Hr 14
billion in monetary terms. A total of 663 million packages were sold in
Ukraine over the period, 70% of which was Ukrainian-made medicine. This
trend has been seen for the past five or six years. This shows that both
doctors and patients prefer medicine made in Ukraine,” he said.

Solovyov said that the average price of a package of medicine made
abroad is Hr 40 and that for Ukrainian-made medicine – Hr 12, which
allows consumers to save money.
