The parliament has reduced from 5% to zero the import duty on silicon (the UKTVED 2804610000 and 2804690000 codes).

Some 257 MPs supported relevant changes to the law on the customs
tariff of Ukraine (to make import duties correspond to WTO criteria, No.
9241-d).

Party of Regions MP Vitaliy Khomutynnyk proposed the reduction of the
import duty on silicon with a purity of not less than 99.99% (solar
silicon, code 2804610000).

Party of Regions MP Yuriy Karakai proposed the abolition of the
import duty on other types of silicon (code 2804690000) before the
second reading of the draft law.

According to the State Statistics Service, Ukraine in January-August
2012 imported solar silicon for a total of $5.952 million. In
particular, solar silicon worth $3.107 million was supplied from Germany
and that worth $2.38 million from the United States.

In addition, in the reporting period Ukraine imported other types of
silicon for a total of $7.374 million. In particular, these goods worth
$3.543 million were delivered from Norway and those worth $1.013 million
from China.

Silicon with a purity of not less than 99.99% (solar silicon) is used for the production of photovoltaic cells.

The only Ukrainian producer of photovoltaic cells and solar panels is Kvazar (Kyiv).
