Winter grains in Ukraine as of September 16 had been sown on 766,000 hectares, or 9% of the projected area, reports the Ministry of Agricultural Policy and Food. 

According to its data, the pace of sowing crops this year is lagging behind the last year one: as of the same date in 2012 winter crops had been sown on 2.035 million hectares.

In particular, winter wheat and triticale this year have been sowed on 691,000 hectares (10% of the forecast), rye on 56,000 hectares (19%), and winter barley on 19,000 hectares (2%).

In addition, winter rapeseeds as of September 16 had been sowed on 673,000 hectares, or 73% of the projected area.

As reported, with reference to the forecasts from the ministry, areas under winter grains in Ukraine for the 2014 harvest will amount to about 8.2 million hectares. Areas under winter rapeseeds, according to the ministry’s calculations, this year will amount to 924,000 hectares.
