You're reading: Ukraine sees 1.6% rise in electricity consumption in five months

Electricity consumption in Ukraine in January-May 2012, including transmission losses in the grids, increased by 1.6% or 1.306 billion kilowatt hours (kWh), to 82.015 billion kWh.

As Interfax-Ukraine learned from a source at the Energy and Coal Industry Ministry, the consumption of electricity without transmission losses over five months ending May 2012 rose by 0.7% or 438.7 million kWh, to 65.54 billion kWh.

Ukraine’s industry in the period posted a 1.2% decrease in electricity consumption without transmission losses, to 30.18 billion kWh. In particular, in metallurgy it fell by 1.7%, to 15.651 billion kWh, the fuel sector by 1.6%, to 3.964 billion kWh, engineering enterprises decreased electricity consumption by 5.8%, to 2.618 billion kWh, the construction materials sector – by 1.2%, to 965.4 million kWh, while chemical and petrochemical companies increased it by 1.9%, to 2.616 billion kWh, the food and processing sector – by 1.1%, to 1.867 billion kWh and

Ukrainian households in the period increased consumption by 4.2%, to 18.108 billion kWh, and for municipally owned housing consumption it was down by 0.2%, to 8.114 billion kWh.

The share of industry in the total consumption of electricity in the five months fell to 46% from 46.9% in January-May 2011, while the share in households fell to 27.6% from 26.7%.

Electricity consumption in May 2012 alone increased by 1.2% from May 2011, to 13.881 billion kWh (with transmission losses) and by 0.8%, to 11.433 billion kWh (without transmission losses).
