Ukrainian railways in May 2012 increased cargo handling by 1.3% compared to May 2011, to 40.456 million tonnes.

 According to the press service of State Railways Administration
Ukrzaliznytsia, cargo exports and imports grew by 8% and 25.8%
respectively, but transit and domestic cargo transportation fell by
17.1% and 1.4% respectively.

Oil and fuel prevailed in transit cargo handling (29.6% of the total
volume, the main shippers being Kazakhstan, Russia and Belarus), the
share of iron and manganese ore was 23.4%, that of coal 18.6%, and that
of ferrous metals 7.1%.

A major reduction was observed in the transportation of iron ore, chemical fertilizers, coal, and fuel.

Coal prevailed in freight imports (42.3% of the total volume), the
share of oil and fuel was 14.4%, and that of iron and manganese ore
12.4%.

The share of construction materials in exports was 25.3% of the total
volume, that of road metal 68%, that of iron and manganese ore 24.8%,
ferrous metals 14.9%, and grains 14.5%. Exports grew by 8%.

The share of coal in transportation inside the country amounted to
37.2%, that of construction materials 18.1%, and that of iron and
manganese ore 15.7%.

As reported, the railways of Ukraine in January-May 2012 carried
184.7 million tonnes of cargos, which corresponds to the same period in
2011.
