Kyiv Post's Best of Kyiv 2010: British Council
Where to study English, if not in the United Kingdom? Kyiv Post readers voted for the British Council as the best English Language School of Kyiv in 2010. The British Council is the United Kingdom’s international educational and cultural organization, where you can study English as if you were in the U.K.
The British Council School has a network of 127 centers around the world sharing materials, teaching experience and ideas about course design. There are 25 teachers at the British Council in Kyiv, most of who are native speakers. The number of students in each group is limited to 12, because the individual approach is one of the British Council’s values.
“While other schools teach their students grammar, we focus on their communication skills,” said Volodymyr Sheiko from the British Council’s press center. “We explain to our students that grammar is just a small part of the language. The most important thing is to feel free in the English-speaking environment – to talk, read and understand English properly.”
Margo Gontar, a former student of the British Council, is happy with her native English-speaking teacher. “He focused on the mistakes that are specific to Ukrainians – misuse of some verbs, for example. I understood that I had been taught a different language all my life” prior to attending the British Council courses, she said.
The British Council opened its doors to the first students more than 10 years ago, in 2000, and this year it became the first English school to provide courses for pre-school children. “This summer we also plan to start an intensive course for children to prepare for university entrance tests or to improve on the knowledge gained during the school year,” said Sheiko.
The British Council provides courses in general, business, legal and financial English. It also prepares students for the language exams. You can also visit the British Council Library.
The British Council has offices not only in Kyiv, but also in Donetsk, Lviv and Odesa.
