Kyiv Post's Best of Kyiv 2010:MTS Connect

Already having a solid foothold in Ukraine’s mobile communications market, Russian-owned MTS started providing Internet service in 2007 and became the favorite of Kyiv Post readers and experts in 2010. In doing so, it bested the usual front-runner, Volia.

One of five companies offering third-generation wireless Internet connection along with PEOPLEnet, Ukrtelecom, Intertelecom and CDMA Ukraina (Kyivstar and Beeline use Ukrtelecom’s roaming so their mobile Internet service isn’t different), MTS Connect has the largest coverage with more than 200 cities and towns.

MTS spokesperson Victoria Ruban said the company has plans to continue developing its 3G network by expanding coverage and boosting capacity in 2011.

It offers an average Internet connection speed that ranges from 200 to 800 kilobytes per second with a maximum speed of incoming traffic that could reach 3.1 megabytes per second.

In a country with more than 15 million Internet users, MTS Connect had 200,000 subscribers by the end of 2010. The company’s 3G network traffic showed a 50 percent increase in the third quarter of 2010 year-on-year.

By contrast, sole 3G license holder Ukrtelecom services roughly 570,000 3G subscribers, according to investment bank Troika Dialog.

MTS charges no monthly fees, allows payment per megabyte and offers unlimited traffic for Hr 8 per day.

Revenues also increased in the third quarter of 2010 by 21 percent compared to the same period in 2009.

While the fixed broadband market services the lion’s share of internet users with 3.4 million subscribers, according to Troika Dialog, third and fourth generation internet is the thing of the future and MTS Connect is sure to remain a key market player in this field.
