Swiss theater Vidy-Lausanne to show Moliere's Misanthrope in Kyiv

ow Moliere's “Misanthrope” at Kyiv's Lesya Ukrainka Theater on June 1-2. Naturally the performance, promoted by the French Cultural Center in Ukraine, will be in French.

Well-known French director Jacque Lassalle staged “Misanthrope” in the Swiss Vidy theater using young and talented actors from the best French companies, such as Comedy Francaise.

Last year this performance was successfully shown in Switzerland and France so the theater went on tour to Poland, Russia and Ukraine.

Moliere's “Misanthrope” is a classic comedy about a love story between Alceste, who dreams of loneliness, and the young, cheerful widow Celimene. About 350 years ago these roles were played by Moliere himself and his lover.

Russian, Ukrainian celebrities to perform with set designer Krasnov

Boris Krasnov is probably the most well-known set designer in the CIS. He designed the scenes for more than 450 shows and performances all over the former USSR.

Now he's gathering a gaggle of celebrities for a variety show on May 28. The cast will include the legendary Alla Pugachova, Iosif Kobzon, Yury Bashmet, Boris Moiseev, Boney M, the Russian Imperial Ballet and Pyatnitskiy Quire.

Krasnov was born in Kyiv and started his career as the chief costume and set designer at Lesya Ukrainka Theater. Krasnov is often called a “self-made man” because he worked his way up the show biz ladder with sheer energy and talent. Now he splits his time between Kyiv and Moscow, where he founded his own company Krasnov Design.

Artists to play soccer and make sand sculptures at international art festival

The Fifth International Art Festival, focusing on the theme of art in the 21st century, will take place at Ukraine House beginning next month. Several Ukrainian and foreign art galleries will present special exhibitions and projects illustrating how they see the art of the 21st century.

Among the most interesting events will be the exhibition of international sacral art, a virtual museum project, Japanese ceramics made by artists from Poland, the United States and Belarus and a collection of works by modern Armenian artists.

On June 10 the festival will move outside to Lvivska ploshcho where a video art presentation will be held in the evening.

During the day, everybody will move to Trukhaniv Island where artists, students of the Arts Academy and even kids from art schools will participate in a sand sculpture contest. This event is traditionally held by the Dim Mykoly gallery.
