Candidates spent $2.5 billion on election campaign, says expert
Political parties and candidates in majority constituencies spent a total of $2.5 billion on political advertising and agitation during the recent parliamentary elections in Ukraine, political scientist and President of the SA Political Communications Group Artem Bidenko has said.
"At these elections we registered a record number of candidates – 2,500 candidates on party lists and 2,500 candidates in majority constituencies. These elections were the most expensive and we estimate their cost at $2.5 billion since the beginning of the year," he said at a press conference in Kyiv on Friday.
Bidenko said the Regions Party had spent around $850 million, the Ukraine-Forward! Party spent some $150 million, and the election campaigns of the rest of the political parties cost $350 million, while candidates in majority constituencies spent some $900 million on the election campaign.
Polling day of the parliamentary elections in Ukraine was on October 28.
