You're reading: Poroshenko confident of Ukrainian judicial reform’s success

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has urged compatriots to actively enter races for judge's seats and positions in new prosecutor's offices.

“Why am I confident of the judicial reform’s success? This is not only because I enjoy the strong support of the entire world and international experts. The Council of Europe’s Venice Commission has given the first positive opinion on constitutional amendments drafted by the Constitutional Commission on my orders. This is not only because many political parties and figures have voiced their support in nationwide debates, but also because there is a current public demand for a reset of the judiciary,” the president said at an international anti-corruption conference in Kyiv on Monday.

Once the relevant constitutional amendments pass, all judges will undergo an independent appraisal procedure and a significant part of the judiciary will be renovated.

The chief of state urged the public to enter races for judge’s seats and positions in the prosecutor’s office, as they did during the recruitment of the new police force. “We will be unable to hold efficient reforms without the participation of society, without the active participation of citizens,” Poroshenko said.
