Sociologist predicts Regions Party could get 200 seats in parliament, opposition - 170
The Regions Party could get 200 out of the 450 seats in parliament in the upcoming elections, Head of the Department of Social and Political Processes at the Institute of Sociology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Oleksandr Vyshniak has said.
"I personally think as a political scientist that the Regions Party could get 200 seats on the majority and proportional lists," he said at a press conference in Kyiv on Wednesday.
He noted that 40-50 seats would be taken by representatives of small parties who will not get into parliament on party lists, as well as individual and self-nominated nominated candidates.
He also predicted that the Communist Party would receive 25 seats in the next parliament, "while a triple opposition [the Batkivschyna United Opposition, UDAR Party and Svoboda] will have 160-170 seats on lists and in single-member constituencies."
"That's my prediction, if the elections are fair. If they are unfair, the Regions Party will receive even more [seats]," Vyshniak said.
Under the new law on parliamentary elections, 50% of MPs are elected on party lists and 50% in single-member districts. The election threshold was increased from 3% to 5%.
