MAKHACHKALA, Russia — Security services say special forces in Russia's restive southern province of Dagestan have killed a suspected militant wanted in connection with the murder of several police officers.

The National Antiterrorism Committee said Gasanbek Islamov was the last surviving member of an armed group involved in the May 2010 attack on police officers and communication workers fixing a mobile phone base station.

Dagestan Interior Ministry spokesman Vyacheslav Gasanov said Islamov was cornered at a hide-out and killed after opening fire while resisting arrest.

The Caspian Sea province has become the epicenter of an Islamic insurgency that has spread across the region after two separatist wars in Chechnya. Shootings, bombings and police security raids occur on a daily basis in Dagestan, which borders Chechnya.
