Moscow - The deployment of elements of the European missile defense system in Romania does not jeopardize Russia's security, said Romanian President Traian Basescu.

“Russia has obtained all the guarantees that the deployment of these missiles is not aimed against it,” he said in an interview with the Voice of Russia radio station.

Only 24 counter missiles will be deployed in Romania as part of efforts to create a European missile system, whereas Russia has a much bigger missile potential, the Romanian president said.

“It is clear that we are defending ourselves against a state with a much smaller missile potential or against terrorist attacks, but not against Russia which has thousands of missiles. What can one do with 24 missiles against the arsenal of the Russian Federation? Which Romanian politician would think that he is protecting his country from Russia with 24 missiles? This is baby talk. Your suspicions can be easily dispelled even from the technical perspective,” the Romanian president said.
