Belarus is to boost electricity imports from Ukraine to 3 billion kWh in 2013 against 2.5 billion kWh in 2012, according to Ambassador of Belarus to Ukraine Valentin Velichko.

“As for electricity, up to 2.5 billion kWh will be supplied from Ukraine this year, there are plans and agreements to boost the supplies by 500 million kWh in 2013,” he told reporters in Minsk on Tuesday.

The ambassador also did not rule out that in 2013 Ukraine could start exporting electricity to Lithuania via Belarus. “There will be cross flows of electricity towards Lithuania, as they are closing Ignalina nuclear power plant,” he added.

As was reported, in the first five months of 2012 Ukraine carried out commercial supplies of electricity to all neighboring countries (Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, Poland, Belarus, and Moldova) except Russia. A total of 3.441 billion kWh of Ukrainian electricity was exported January through May 2012.

Belarus imported 1.287 billion kWh of Ukrainian electricity in the five months, which was 59.2%, or 478.7 million kWh, up on January-May 2011.
