The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has reported that Ukrainian human rights activist Volodymyr Chemerys was detained in Minsk after Belarusian law enforcers received a report about suspicious events in front of the office of Vesna human rights group.

"The police call center received a report that that people were bringing suspicious stuff into the room, so everyone, who were near and inside the office, were detained," the law enforcers told the Ukrainian Embassy in Belarus.

On Wednesday, at 2200, Chemerys was released without being presented any charges, the Foreign Ministry’s press service said.

Since he missed the night train, he is likely to go home on Thursday, the press service added.

Chairman of the Republic Institute NGO Chemerys was to make a report dedicated to the events on Independence Square in Minsk on December 19, 2010.

Two of the five Russian civil activists, who were also detained by police in Minsk on Wednesday, were declared personae non gratae in Belarus and expelled from the country.
