Nine people have frozen to death in Russia in the past 24 hours, a healthcare sector source told Interfax on Tuesday.

“Five people have died of frostbite and hypothermia in the Tyumen region over the past 24 hours. The Bryansk, Yaroslavl and Lipetsk regions, as well as [the Republic of] Chuvashia reported one such fatality each,” the source said.

“A total of 223 people have died of frostbite and overexposure to the cold during the cold spell in Russian regions,” he said.

Seventy-four people have suffered from hypothermia in Russia in the past 24 hours, he said. Of them, 44 were hospitalized.

The largest number of such cases was reported in Bashkortostan (13), Chuvashia (12) and the Tyumen region (9), the source said.

“Three people have been affected by freezing conditions in Moscow in the past 24 hours, bringing the number of such cases to 179. The death toll from the cold spell in Moscow stands at five,” the source said.

As many as 4,900 people, including 215 children, have suffered from frostbite and hypothermia in Russia this winter, he said.

“Of them, more than 2,600, including 95 children, were admitted to hospitals,” the source said.
