MOSCOW - Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller supports the idea of holding a CIS football championship.

“Very, very many people believe that we could hold a CIS football
championship, and I’m also convinced supporter of this idea,” Miller
said Saturday in an interview with the website of the Zenit football
club, responding to a question about whether Zenit might withdraw from
the Russian championships.

“If the time comes to create a new championship, we will act and take
well-considered steps only in coordination with people who support the
goal of creating a football championship of Commonwealth countries,”
Miller said.

“Such a conversation was held recently, so the answer is affirmative –
perhaps we will play in a different championship,” Miller said.

Commenting on his Friday meeting with Zenit head coach Luciano
Spalletti, Miller said that “although it was an emergency meeting, it
was not short.”

“Luciano and I agreed that specifically about this meeting between us
there would be only one comment: no comment,” Miller added.

The journalist taking the interview told Miller that Zenit fans had
conducted their own investigation and had not found among themselves the
person who threw the firecracker from the stands that injured Dynamo
goalkeeper Anton Shunin last week.

“I believe Zenit’s fans,” Miller said.
