HAMILTON, Bermuda — A Latvian man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for smuggling $48 million worth of cocaine and scores of bullets into Bermuda on his yacht.

Judge Carlisle Greaves says the haul of drugs found on the man’s boat was the biggest ever discovered in the British territory.

Janis Zegelis had asked for leniency, saying he was a father of three. He claimed he was framed by a Russian man who had threatened to kill him and his family.

Prosecutors say he was attempting to smuggle the drugs from Trinidad to Latvia when he stopped in Bermuda after his boat was damaged at sea.
