Russia is not conducting negotiations with any countries on the recognition of the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Wednesday, March 14.

"We actively support their efforts to expand their international activities and foreign policy contacts. We are not running after anyone and we are not convincing anyone to recognize Abkhazia and South Ossetia," Lavrov told a "government hour" meeting in the State Duma on Wednesday.

"We are not conducting these negotiations. It is done by our independent allies, Abkhazia and South Ossetia. They have their own plans for foreign policy activities and they communicate with a number of countries throughout the world, not just those that have recognized the two countries. Of course, they discuss such issues," Lavrov said.
