Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has spoken of the need to unite the potentials of the European and Eurasian unions noting that Belarus may play its own geopolitical role in this respect.

"Belarus is not a backyard of Europe but a door to Eurasia, a key to the implementation of the idea of integrations," he said on Friday in Polotsk at festivities on the 1150th anniversary of the city.

"The unification of the potentials of the European and Eurasian unions will permit the creation of absolutely new opportunities for the dynamic development and all-round cooperation of countries and nations of the two continents," the Belarusian president said.

"We see the key mission and geopolitical role of our country as a link in promoting this idea," Lukashenko said.

"Any European considering himself a European must visit this place (Polotsk), the geographical center of Europe," he said.

"Roaming the streets where the traditions of the West and East, different creeds and cultures have entwined over more than a thousand years, it is easier to understand that our common past is a step to our common future," he added.
