You're reading: Medvedev: Russia and Poland should restore historical truth

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has called for a full and ultimate investigation of the "Katyn case", saying he hopes this will help heal other sores in Russian-Polish relations.

"Our history abounds in tragic events. Lots of people suffered – not only Poles, but lots of our citizens suffered during the period of repressions. We should give it a thorough and serious study. We will continue to discuss this topic and I am sure than in the long run this will help us overcome various difficulties hampering our relations," Medvedev told a press conference after talks with Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski.

This process should not be confined solely to the "Katyn case", he said.

"We should work towards restoring historical truth in general, including the tragic events that happened earlier," Medvedev said.

Large numbers of Soviet Red Army servicemen disappeared in Poland during the civil war, he said.

"Russia has taken a whole number of unprecedented steps lately, including the handover of archives on the ‘Katyn case’ and the copies of statements issued by our parliament – the State Duma. This is our conscious choice and we will not divert from it. We must know the truth. That is equally necessary for Poles and Russians," Medvedev said.

Medvedev came on a two day visit that is expected to improve the traditionally troubled relations, basically through intensifying trade and economic cooperation.
