You're reading: Medvedev sends condolences over Luhansk mine tragedy

Moscow, July 29 (Interfax-Ukraine) - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has sent condolences to Ukrainian leader Viktor Yanukovych following the death of 16 people in an explosion at a coal mine in Ukraine's Luhansk region early on Friday morning, the Kremlin has reported.

"Please accept my sincere condolences in light of the tragedy that occurred at the Sukhodilska-Skhidna coal mine in Luhansk region. I am asking you to convey my words of support to the families of those killed and my wishes of a speedy recovery to those injured," Medvedev said in his message.

Three people have been hospitalized and nine more remain unaccounted for following the accident at the Luhansk region mine.

Ukrainian emergency officials say that an explosion at one coal mine and an elevator collapse at another have killed at least 17 people and injured 11.

Nine miners are still missing in the blast.
