MOSCOW - Russian gas giant Gazprom has not ruled out filing a lawsuit against Naftogaz Ukrainy for failing to meet its end of a contract in 2012, Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller said at a press conference.

“We have a very attentive attitude to the legal aspects of the
contract’s execution” he said, adding that documents confirming
Ukraine’s failure to collect minimum gas volume “might serve as the
basis for an action.” However, Miller proposed waiting until the end of
this year to assess the situation.

Miller said that Ukraine’s gas transport system was designed and
built for large volumes of Russian gas transit. “If construction of Nord
Stream and South Stream is completed in the very near future, along
with the possible construction of Nord Stream’s third and fourth
branches, the question arises on how Ukraine’s gas transport system
would function. This issue still hasn’t been reviewed in theory or using
a practical plan. The time has come for our Ukrainian colleagues to
think about this issue,” Miller said, adding: “I think there might be
problems.”

Gazprom’s CEO also said that transit of gas through Belarus is more effective than any other transit country.
