You're reading: Nearly 170 terrorist crimes committed in Russia in 2011

A total of 169 terrorist crimes were committed in Russia and 95 law enforcement officers were killed in the first six months of 2011, Federal Security Service (FSB) chief Alexander Bortnikov said.

"Speaking about the country in general, 169 crimes were committed," Bortnikov said at a meeting with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

Of the crimes, 110 were committed in Dagestan, he said.

Overall, 52 terror plots were foiled, Bortnikov said.

"We have lost 95 [law enforcement] officers and 200 people have been injured," he added.

At the beginning of the meeting, the president inquired about the course of the counter-terrorism struggle in the North Caucasus and other Russian regions.

Bortnikov said that the situation in Dagestan was the most complicated.

Speaking about counter-terrorism activity in Russia, he said that 280 homemade explosive devices, over 500 kg of explosives as well as large amounts of arms had been seized in the past six months.

"Four hundred bandits and their accomplices were detained and 250 bandits were neutralized" over the same period, Bortnikov said.
