MOSCOW - Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak has confirmed that Ukraine requested electricity imports from Russia last week.

A source in the Ukrainian Energy and Coal Industry Ministry told Interfax on June 24 that Russia was supplying 600 megawatts of capacity to Ukraine under the agreement on technical assistance due to the supply shortfall that has arisen. “Beginning at 7 o’clock today, we are receiving 600 megawatts in technical assistance from Russia. The need arose due to the shutdown of nuclear power plant generating units (against the backdrop of rising demand due to the heat wave),” the source said.

“The request (for supplies) arrived last week,” Novak told Interfax on Monday.

“There were no requests this week,” he said.
