Moscow - The defense lawyers for the Pussy Riot activists will file an appeal to contest the sentence handed out to the young women by the Moscow Khamovnichesky Court.
Nikolai Polozov, a lawyer for one of the Pussy Riot activists, said the defense lawyers have not yet received a copy of the sentence.
“According to the regulations, they are required to provide us with a copy of the sentence within five days from the day on which it was handed out. After that, we will have ten days to prepare and file a cassation appeal with the Moscow City Court,” Polozov said.
This means that the lawyers will likely will a cassation appeal next week, he said.
Polozov said he is preparing to file appeals contesting the sentence with the Russian Supreme and Constitutional Courts and the Court of Human Rights.
The Moscow Khamovnichesky Court on August 17 sentenced the three Pussy Riot activists to two years in a penal colony. The women’s lawyers said they will file appeals with the Moscow City Court, Russian Supreme and Constitutional Courts, and the Court of Human Rights.
On February 21, 2012, several masked Pussy Riot activists carried out a stunt in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, which drew broad public response. A criminal case was opened on the basis of the article of the Russian Criminal Code dealing with hooliganism.
