Anapa - South Stream will not damage the Black Sea enviroment, President Vladimir Putin said at a ceremony on Friday to mark the start of the construction of the gas pipeline.

“This project, the same as Nord Stream, will conform to the most advanced standards. We have thoroughly studied the Black Sea area through which the pipeline will be laid. I can assure all the participants in the project that it will meet the highest environmental standards,” he said.

Putin said about 1,000 sensors had been installed along the Nord Stream pipeline to transmit real-time data to satellites, which would send it further to interested countries.

“We will do the same here. I do not doubt there will be no damage to the Black Sea environment. On the contrary, we will study the Black Sea, the same as we have studied the Baltic Sea, and help keep it clean and ensure its environmental safety,” the president said.
