Russia's agriculture watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor has tightened control over deliveries of pork and poultry from Germany after highly toxic dioxin was discovered in animal feed in the country.

Dioxin-contaminated feed poses a serious threat both to animals and humans who will eat this meat, Rosselkhoznadzor spokesman Alexei Alexeyenko told Interfax.

The German authorities have banned sales of products from 4,000 farms.

"We are worried that neither the veterinary services of Germany nor the veterinary services of the European Commission have provided us with official information on this problem. This once again confirms that the European Union still lacks a system allowing it to promptly respond to situations that could pose a threat both to animals and humans," Alexeyenko said.
