You're reading: Russian EU envoy: Ukraine leader’s refusal to prolong ceasefire does not match peaceful settlement declaration

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko's decision not to prolong the ceasefire with militiamen in southeastern Ukraine is a negative sign and does not match the declared plans to settle the conflict in the country peacefully, Russia's envoy to the European Union Vladimir Chizhov told reporters.

“The refusal to prolong the ceasefire is certainly a negative sign. It is even more difficult to understand the logic of the combination of the confirmed so-called 15-point peace plan and the rejection of a ceasefire,” he said.

Whereas the meetings earlier held in Donetsk offered some hope for the establishment of a political dialogue inside Ukraine, “certainly it will be more difficult to achieve this in today’s conditions,” the diplomat said.
