MAKHACHKALA — Police in Russia say three suspected militants were killed during the storming of an apartment in the third clash between gunmen and government troops in as many days in a district in the southern republic of Dagestan.

Interior Ministry spokesman Vyacheslav Gasanov said the no police officers were hurt during the Friday operation in Buynaksk.

Buynaksk,
which lies some 35 kilometers west of the capital, Makhachkala, was the
scene of a grenade attack Wednesday on the Interior Ministry’s
anticorruption division headquarters in which two police officers died.

A day later, four gunmen were shot dead after they opened fire on a checkpoint on the road out of town.

Authorities
have struggled to quell an insurgency in this mainly Muslim republic
that spread across the North Caucasus after two separatist wars in
Chechnya.
