You're reading: Blokhin: Shevchenko’s retirement from international football a loss to national team

Ukraine coach Oleh Blokhin has said he thinks that Andriy Shevchenko's retirement from international football will be a loss to the national team and that a new striker of his level will not appear in Ukraine soon.

“It is a big loss for the team. And now we have to think about how to
play attacking football. We currently have no strikers of this kind. We
cannot play like Spain without forwards,” he said at a meeting of the
press club in Kyiv on June 26.

“It was probably a big surprise that Shevchenko was included in the
starting lineup. However, as experience shows, an old horse won’t spoil
the furrow. He has an innate sense that I and Belanov had, and that
Messi, Ronaldo now have,” Blokhin said.

The coach believes that Ukrainian clubs should start bringing up new strikers and help change the situation.
