KHARKIV - A stadium for 5,000-7,000 seats will be built in Kharkiv for hosting the EuroBasket 2015 European Basketball Championship, the press service of Kharkiv Regional State Administration has reported.

“We plan to build a state-of-the-art stadium by 2015 capable of
accommodating 6,000 spectators for basketball and volleyball games,
5,000 spectators for hockey games and 7,000 spectators for concerts. It
will be a kind of transformer, which can be quickly rearranged using
modern technologies depending on the need, and at the same time it will
be comfortable, compact, beautiful and economical,” the press service
quoted Head of Kharkiv Regional State Administration Mykhailo Dobkin as
saying.

According to him, there was no sense to build a basketball stadium
for 10,000 seats or more in Kharkiv due to the high cost of its
maintenance. In addition, such a stadium would not be filled at sports
events and festivities.

“The city of Kharkiv many times sent delegations to various countries
where basketball forums were held, and solely on the basis of the
practice of these states we found that this format (a stadium for
5,000-7,000 seats) is the best for a city with the population of a half a
million,” Dobkin stressed.

On December 18, 2011 Ukraine received the right to host the European
Basketball Championship in 2015. Ukraine proposed hosting the
championship in its largest cities, including Kyiv, Odesa,
Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Lviv, Kharkiv and Ivano-Frankivsk
