The construction of a new multipurpose sports and entertainment arena in Dnipropetrovsk that will host the final tournament of the EuroBasket 2015 European basketball Championship will be completed by the end of 2014, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said.

“This sports complex will be commissioned in late 2014, and it will start preparing for EuroBasket 2015,” he said during a ceremony to lay a capsule in the foundation of the sports arena in Dnipropetrovsk on Tuesday.

He said that the issue concerns a significant event for Ukraine and the region.

He said that the year 2012 was very significant for Ukraine in terms of sports. In particular, Euro 2012 was successfully held, and Ukraine’s national teams performed well at the Olympic and Paralympic Games in London.

“The year 2013 is also a test for us to a certain extent,” Yanukovych said, adding that this year Ukraine will host the World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships and youth championships in athletics and basketball.

The president also said that Ukraine would improve its approaches to health and sport every year. He also urged philanthropists to more actively invest in the financing of sports projects.
