Financial Times: Yanukovych talks of ‘pause’ in EU ties

According to the Financial Times report, It was not immediately clear if Viktor Yanukovych's talk about a "pause" in relations with the EU marked a "shift away from his stated foreign policy goal of European integration." But one day earlier, pro-presidential lawmaker Volodymyr Zubanov suggested that proposals by Russia for closer economic relations were looking attractive amid Ukraine's souring relations with the EU.

In a May 12 Financial Times report, Neil Buckley and Roman Olearchyk write:"Ukraine’s president has suggested it was time for a 'pause' in relations with the European Union, amid signs that the country’s deteriorating ties with western Europe risk driving it back into the arms of Russia."
According to the report, the eyebrow raising comments by Viktor Yanukovych come one day after Angela Merkel,Germany'schancellor,became the first European leader to refer to Ukraine as a “dictatorship.”
