Police in Ukraine have prevented an attempt by protesters to storm the city council building in the eastern city of Kharkiv to prevent lawmakers there from voting to approve the Russian language as an official regional language.

Police in Ukraine have prevented an attempt by protesters to storm the city council building in the eastern city of Kharkiv to prevent lawmakers there from voting to approve the Russian language as an official regional language.

Hundreds of protesters chanting "Shame!" and "No to Russification!" were blocked from entering the building.

The Kharkiv City Council voted to implement the new law on state-language policy.
