You're reading: 300 lawmakers support Ukraine’s armed forces

Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada on Sunday voted for a resolution to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other military formations of Ukraine.

The draft of the resolution was tabled by parliament speaker and acting president of Ukraine Oleksandr Turchynov. It was supported by 300 lawmakers at a parliament meeting held behind closed doors on Sunday, MP from the Batkivschyna faction Andriy Shevchenko said.

The draft resolution is available on the parliament’s Web site.

“When Ukraine’s territorial integrity and national sovereignty are under threat and there are provocations of a military scenario and destabilization in the country, violations of its peace and tranquility, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, on behalf of the people of Ukraine, expresses complete solidarity and full support of the Armed Forces of Ukraine who are ready to defend our country and of all personnel – from ordinary people to ministers,” reads the resolution.

“[The Ukrainian parliament] unreservedly endorses the decision by the National Security and Defense of Ukraine adopted March 1, 2014, to place the Armed Forces of Ukraine on full combat alert. [The parliament] authorizes the Cabinet of Ministers to take immediate measures to improve the materiel and financial support of all the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine related to the protection of Ukraine, its sovereignty and territorial integrity. If necessary, it should immediately submit to parliament its proposals regarding amendments to the law on the national budget of Ukraine for 2014,” the document reads.

Interfax-Ukraine has no information about possible amendments to the draft resolution made during its adoption as the lawmakers were meeting behind closed doors.
