The administration of the Krasnodonugol coal company in Ukranie's eastern Luhansk region, which runs the Sukhodilska-Skhidna coal mine in Sukhodilsk, where a deadly blast occurred in the early hours of Friday, will pay Hr 1 million to the families of the killed miners.

Sixteen workers were killed in an explosion at the Sukhodilska-Skhidna coal mine early on Friday morning. Three miners were hospitalized with burns and injuries. Nine more people remain unaccounted for after the accident, according to Ukraine’s Emergency Ministry.

The mine is owned by Rinat Akhmetov, Ukranie’s richest man. It is a part of Akhmetov’s Krasnodonugol (Krasnodonvuhillia in Ukrainian) coal company, which is a leading coal producer in Ukranie and operates a handful of mines. In turn, Krasnodonugol is a part of Akhmetov’s Metinvest steel holding, the largest steel producer in Ukraine.

On Tuesday, three workers died at another mine in the eastern part of the country when the roof collapsed.
