You're reading: Akhmetov wealthiest Ukrainian according to Korrespondent magazine

Ukrainian billionaire and MP Rinat Akhmetov has been declared the wealthiest Ukrainian for the eighth year running by Korrespondent magazine and Dragon Capital investment company.

“Compared to the last year, his fortune fell by a third, from $25.6
billion to $17.8 billion,” the Web site of Korrespondent reported on
Thursday.

The publication said this was due to the ore price dropping on the
world markets, as well as the lowering of the investment attractiveness
of Ukraine, where the major enterprises owned by Akhmetov are
concentrated.

“Ihor Kolomoisky holds the second place after a large gap. His assets
roughly halved, from $6 billion to $3.4 billion. The newcomer Vadim
Novinsky, who swapped his Russian citizenship for Ukrainian, is third.
His assets total $3.3 billion. Hennadiy Boholiubov, the partner of
Kolomoisky, is in the fourth place. His enterprises are estimated to be
worth $3.25 billion,” Korrespondent wrote, adding that the fortunes of
the four leaders of the list had considerably dropped.

However, the assets of Dmytro Firtash, who is in fifth place in the list, rose from $2.2 billion to $3.2 billion.

Son of Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, Oleksandr Yanukovych,
climbed from 70th place to the 61st place in a year. His fortune has
increased from $130 million to $133 million.

“The top ten of the rating includes seven steel makers, two
agrarians, and one representative of the chemical industry. Fourteen
people from the golden hundred earned their capital in metallurgy, the
contribution of which to GDP is over 34%. Another 31 businessmen
concentrated on the agrarian sector and food industry,” the publication
wrote.

According to it, the top five of the hundred wealthiest Ukrainians in
total own assets equal to the fortunes of the other 95 participants of
the rating together. The first hundred richest Ukrainians lost 25% of
their capital in a year.

A quarter of those in the rating were born in Donetsk or Donetsk region.
