Ukraine and Russia are preparing an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in the recycling of wheeled vehicles, Ukrainian Ambassador to Russia Volodymyr Yelchenko has said.

“The concerned ministries of Ukraine and Russia have currently begun
consultations in order to take a mutually acceptable decision on a
vehicle recycling tax. The sides are preparing a draft intergovernmental
agreement on cooperation in the sphere of the recycling of wheeled
vehicles,” the diplomat said in an exclusive interview with
Interfax-Ukraine.

He said that Ukraine was deeply concerned about the Russian
government’s decision to introduce a vehicle recycling tax on imported
cars from September 1, 2012.

According to the ambassador, the Ukrainian side, in turn, took
respective measures to protect the interests of domestic producers.

“We didn’t want to resort to countermeasures, and we hope that this
issue can be resolved in accordance with the principles of the World
Trade Organization, a member of which Russia has recently become,”
Yelchenko said.
