You're reading: Ashton hopes to have good news after meeting with Azarov

BRUSSELS – EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton said she hopes to have good news after her meeting with Ukrainian Premier Mykola Azarov on May 15.

She said this at a press conference in Brussels on May 14 following a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council.

"The most important message I would like to pass to the premier is that we [the EU] want to be linked [with Ukraine] by the Association Agreement. We believe that Ukraine is an important neighbour, but we cannot move forward if Ukraine does not respect our main values. And we hope that tomorrow we will have really good news that will allow us to achieve this," she said.

Ashton also said she hopes that Azarov will "bring news" on May 15.

"It will be very interesting to me to hear what he says, how he sees the future, and whether he believes that Ukraine can move forward," she said.

Ashton added that Kyiv and Brussels should develop their relations, but "it is very difficult to see how we can deepen these relations, until the current problems [selective justice, etc.], are settled."
