WELS, Austria, Sept. 22 – Austria lost to Ukraine’s doubles team on Saturday to miss an early decision in the Euro-African Zone Group 1 Davis Cup tie ahead of the reverse singles.

Ukraine, deprived of their key player Andriy Medvedev for the second day, defeated the host country in doubles when Andrej Dernowski and Orest Tereshchuk beat Julian Knowle and Juergen Melzer in five sets 7:6 (8/6) 2:6, 6:3, 1:6, 6:3 in a match that lasted three hours and 10 minutes.

Team officials have said Medvedev was unable to play because he was suffering from food poisoning.

Austria leads 2-1 going into Sunday’s reverse singles.
