You're reading: Azarov against introduction of tax on deposits

The Ukrainian government has opposed the introduction of a tax on income from bank deposits, Prime Minister of Ukraine Mykola Azarov has said.

“I know only about the introduction of tax on income received from deposits. This means that it is proposed to tax no deposits but income from deposits. So, I’m against this,” he wrote on his page on Facebook, when communicating with users on Thursday.

“We are interested in expanding our banking system, and we should encourage our people to deposit money. Therefore the government opposes taxes on income from deposits,” he added.

In addition, the premier believes the idea of taxation of deposits is absurd, as the same income cannot be taxed twice.

As reported, MP Yevhen Sihal (the Party of Regions) proposed a 25% tax on income of citizens’ deposits. On Feb. 26, he submitted a relevant draft bill to the Verkhovna Rada.
