You're reading: Azarov welcomes tightening of fiscal discipline in European Union

Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov has said he welcomes the tightening of fiscal discipline in the European Union.

"I believe that the European Union took a decision that should have been taken long ago. The fact that the EU has finally made the right conclusions makes us confident that order will be brought [to the EU] sooner or later," he told reporters in Kyiv on Tuesday.

He said that this was the only inevitable and absolutely logical measure, as if there is a common currency, there must be a common fiscal policy.

"Under the conditions a single investment center, a single central bank, one country cannot draft a budget with a surplus and live within its own means, while another country drafts the budget with a 10% deficit and lives at the expense of others," he said.
