You're reading: Barroso, Rompuy call for immediate investigation into Malaysian plane crash in Ukraine

Brussels - European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and European Council Herman Van Rompuy, in a joint statement issued late on Thursday, July 17 due to the crash of Malaysian Airliner Flight MH7, expressed their condolences to the prime ministers of the Netherlands and Malaysia, the governments of all other countries affected by the tragedy, as well as the families of the victims.

“We call for an immediate and thorough investigation into the causes
of the crash. The facts and responsibilities need to be established as
quickly as possible. The European Union will continue to follow this
issue very closely,” reads the statement.

Barroso and Van Rompuy said that they were shocked by the crash of
the Malaysian airliner in Ukraine and the tragic loss of so many lives.
Citizens from many nationalities, including from the European Union,
have been killed, reads the statement.
