You're reading: Cavusoglu: PACE not to raise question of illegitimacy of parliamentary elections in Ukraine

The deputy head of the PACE's observation mission for the parliamentary elections in Ukraine and the former PACE president, Mevlut Cavusoglu, has said that the PACE will not raise the question of the illegitimacy of the parliamentary elections in Ukraine.

“I don’t think that the PACE will raise the question of the
illegitimacy of these elections. This is my personal opinion,” he said
at a press conference at the press center for international observers in
Kyiv on Monday.

He said that a preliminary report by PACE observers currently does
not say that the parliamentary elections in Ukraine were illegitimate.

Cavusoglu said that most observers had assessed Election Day in Ukraine as “good” or “very good.”

“I think that the will of the people was reflected in these elections,” he said.

Cavusoglu also said that the conviction of former Prime Minister
Yulia Tymoshenko should not influence the recognition of the legitimacy
of the elections.

At the same time, he noted that the parliamentary elections were
marred by the Tymoshenko case and that her complaint would be considered
by the European Court of Human Rights, and Ukraine should accept the
court’s decision.
